blubeagle: Flying with shunts/hydrocephalus?

Hi all...

I need some advice. I need to know what others' neurosurgeons/neurologists have said about flying. I'd heard that flying with hydrocephalus/shunts, isn't recommended. I've flown in the past, but would like to fly now...am very uncertain of this.

I appreciate your help.

I have shunted hydro and I've never had a problem with flying, and I've done a lot of it, both across the country and across the ocean. I've also never had a doctor tell me I shouldn't fly.

Thank you.

You're welcome.

After doing a little more research, I've discovered that most doctors think it's safe for hydro patients to fly.

I am so damned relieved. Now...off to vacate! :+)

It's more of a good intentions vaca, more than anything! My partner and I will have to save up some money, but if we can, I want to go back home to California. I haven't been home in almost twenty years.

BTW...I forgot that I'd said on 'song's journal that I was going to friend you...I humbly apologize! Problem resolved, now that I remember you!

No apology necessary! I attempt to make LJ a drama-free zone since the rest of my life tends to be overly dramatic. I just came back from California (unfortunately for me; the weather there is SO much better than here).

Where did you go? (I'm from Santa Barbara)

The weather here (MI) is pretty bad, though not as bad as it could be. I just want some warm weather! Probably not until the year after next, if we're lucky! LOL.

I wouldn't count on warmth any time soon if I were you. Returning to Chicago from Cali was definitely an adjustment, and I was only there for a week! I went to Orange County to visit family.

I'm definitely not counting on it! LOL. I love Chicago. My partner and I drifted in and out through it one whirlwind night and it was just lovely. I used to go to Shriner's in Oak Park, when I was a kid.

A week...sounds lovely. :+)

A week in the OC is just the right amount of time for me. I love living in Chicago. Never been to Shriner's tho; all my procedures since I moved to the area as a small child were at Children's Memorial or Rush or University of Chicago.

I loved Shriners. I've always been a huge clown/circus/carnival kinda girl and the Shriners clowns would come and entertain us. I've been to the one there in Chicago and the one in San Francisco.

I never got down to the OC. I'll have to check it out, sometime. :+)

I must confess that I don't really care for the area my mom lives in; there's NOTHING within walking (or wheeling) distance, and there's not a lot of public transportation. Also, the paratransit system there is truly horrible, which leaves me no way to get anywhere on my own, which is a big reason I don't live there.

Ah! You're the second person I've heard say this! I have another friend who lives there and she hates it. She says it's not 'gimp-friendly' at all. :+)

Not remotely. I'd rather live in San Francisco, and everyone knows about the hills there. At least those hills take you to something worthwhile, and there's transportation too! But my mom loves where she lives and I'm thrilled being here so it all works out.

Guess it does! LOL.

I have to get off my computer now and go rest my head. The pressure outside is beginning to make it hurt a little, and it's midnight...so, I will see you soon, yes?

Yes. Feel better, I have a pressure headache tonight myself...

My Neuro guy said it was ok. I've flown from the UK to the US (7 hours) and back several times now. The only thing that I'm not too keen on trying is flying in a small airplane, like a two seater.
